III INTERNATIONAL GUITAR FESTIVAL
September, 13th to 18th, 2021
The idea of organising the International Guitar Festival “Ferran Sor”, in the city of Barcelona, originates in the desire to promote and raise awareness of the life and work of the eminent Catalan composer and guitarist, born in Barcelona in 1778.
This festival is intended as the most effective way in which to pay homage to Ferran Sor i Muntades, the most important musical personality in eighteenth-century guitar history. The works of this extraordinary composer, concert performer and pedagogue are well known. His music is still performed by famous guitarists and students of today, and published by the most prestigious music publishers of the world.
Thanks to its great expressive power and versatility, the guitar has always been a dynamic and heterogeneous medium, which has been able to adapt to many different musical styles and be part of innumerable ensembles.
With the festival, the city of Barcelona is presented with an important opportunity to keep alive the memory of one of its most important and influential personalities; not only for his musical legacy as a whole, but also for what he contributed to the classical guitar canon.

During the festival’s second edition, six concerts by Marcin Dylla, Anabel Montesinos, Pyrophorus Guitar Duo, Guillem Pérez-Quer and Marco Tamayo will take place. Each artist has been chosen for his own undeniable artistic qualities and his international recognition.
The closing concert will comprise performances by the three best students participating in at least one master class and Emerson Salazar, winner of the Certamen Internacional de Guitarra Miquel LLobet 2016.
MASTER CLASSES & COMPETITION
Pedagogical importance of the International Guitar Festival “Ferran Sor” is highlighted: during a week, there will be master classes given by each invited artist, for a total daily duration of 5 hours and 15 minutes, which will accommodate seven students, each of which will receive a 45 minute lesson. The festival will also offer the chance to benefit from these classes for those who want to attend as listeners.
The best masterclass student of the International Guitar Festival Sor will receive a diploma and a prize consisting in a paid concert for Art LLobet 2021, in Barcelona, and in the production of a professional video and audio recording (max. 10 minutes) that will be published on the website and social networks of the International Guitar Festival “Ferran Sor”.
The three best students will be announced on Friday, September 17th, and they must perform, each one, a 15 minutes program, in the Closing Concert, on September 18th, at the end of which, the winner will be announced.
This competition is open to all guitarists attending, at least, one master class as active student. In order to participate, you must send a smartphone quality video recording (max. 10 minutes, min. 5 minutes) with no editing (if any scene change or interruption are detected, the video recording will be considered ineligible). They are requested to update their own video recording on YouTube, Vimeo, Dropbox or Google Drive and to send an email message, with the embedded link, to email@example.com, within August, 30th, 2021.
The Festival will present a cycle of four lectures and a documentary, from Tuesday 14 to Saturday 18, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm, at the Conservatori Municipal de Música de Barcelona (CMMB).
The first one will be held by the luthier Santiago Canals who will talk about the construction of the concert guitar and those used by Ferran Sor.
The other two lectures will be centred on the figure of Ferran Sor and will be held by the guitarist and composer Jaume Torrent, author of several works for guitar, and by the forte-pianist Xavier Rivera and the soprano Margarida Natividade.
Last lecture, about Emilio Pujol’s life, will be hold by the guitarist and PhD musicologist Maria Ribera Gibal.
The International Guitar Festival Ferran Sor will also accommodate and be of interest to guitar makers, music publishers, record labels, and string and guitar accessories manufactures.
The exhibition will open on Monday, September 13th at 5 pm and will end on Wednesday 15th at 7 pm. It will take place at the Peixera hall of the Music Conservatory of Barcelona (CMMB). Exhibitors who wish to stay more days, are welcome and they can exhibit until Saturday 19th at 7 pm.
Each day, from Monday to Saturday, from 1 pm to 1:30 pm, a guitar test of luthiers’ instruments participating in the Festival will be held by the invited artists, at the Auditorium “Eduard Toldrà”.
In addition, on September 15th, at 11 am, a guided tour through luthiers’ and exhibitor’s stands will be held by luthier Santiago Canals, to give the opportunity to personally know and appreciate concert guitars and luthiers from all over the world.
